A Memorial Day Weekend to Remember

Over these past two years, navigating life as a single woman has taught me how to truly appreciate life, create my own moments of happiness, lean on my support system, and savor the little things that often go unnoticed. So, after a long and intense work week, I decided to reward myself with a beautiful weekend filled with love, connection, and joy.

It all started Thursday night with dinner at Circles Waterfront with one of my single and “salsera” girlfriends. We had spent so much time dancing together, finding joy and leaving pain behind on the dance floor, yet we had never actually shared a dinner. That evening turned into such a meaningful moment filled with conversations about life, dreams, hope, healing, and endless laughter.

I’ve shared before how dancing helped me cope with my divorce, but lately, I have slowed down, finding comfort in peaceful routines, quiet moments, and getting lost in a good book. On Friday night, I decided to reconnect with that part of myself and went dancing again. I met up with two friends, enjoyed dinner together, and headed to our favorite spot, the Dance Factory. After the first salsa dance, I realized the joy was still there. For a few hours, the music allowed me to forget the pain, the unknown, and the subtle fear.  The rhythm gently lifted the weight of everyday struggles and brought me joy.

Saturday was spent at sea aboard a day cruise with St. Pete Coastal Cruises, celebrating my friend Carline’s birthday. There was something so refreshing about being surrounded by the ocean, good company, laughter, and sunshine. It was another reminder that happiness can be found in the simplest moments.

Then on Sunday morning, my family and I flew to New York to celebrate my cousin’s retirement after 26 years with the NYPD. To say he was surprised to see all of us fly in to celebrate such an important milestone would be an understatement. Although it was a short trip, it was absolutely worth it. Being surrounded by family filled my heart and soul in a way that words cannot fully describe.

At the end of the weekend, I realized something important: although I may be alone, I am far from lonely. I have surrounded myself with love, friendship, family, and meaningful moments, making this Memorial Day weekend one to remember.

Life may not always be easy, but it is still worth living. And sometimes, it is up to us to romanticize our lives and truly savor the little moments that make it beautiful.

If you are reading this, I hope you remember that this present moment is all we truly have. Being single is not something to fear or endure. It can actually be a beautiful season of self-discovery, freedom, healing, and learning to do what genuinely makes your soul happy.

With love, Marjie!
